Classical Ballet
Learn from the finest teachers to develop grace, elegance and precision. Ballet is the basis of all dance training and improves strength, posture, balance and flexibility.

Introduction to Ballet Workshop
For absolute beginners, learn the basics of classical ballet in a welcoming, encouraging environment. This workshop will allow students to progress at a steady pace over the session. Registration is required and can be accepted only up to the third class of the session. We encourage participants with no ballet experience to take this workshop before progressing to beginner ballet.

Blending Broadway, contemporary and lyrical jazz styles and techniques, our high-energy teachers challenge you with dynamic across the floor work and combinations.

Beginner Jazz Workshop
Learn basics of jazz dance in this workshop. Each class will include a warm up, focused on developing technique and strength, traveling diagonal combinations and a centre combination. Exercises and combinations will progress over the session. Registration is required and can be accepted only up to the third class of the session.

Drawing on both classical ballet and modern dance, this class explores total body movement. Our contemporary classes include strengthening floor work as well as engaging traveling combinations.

DanceFit Barre
This class combines ballet based barre exercises to strengthen and lengthen the lower body with essential floor exercises for the core and upper body.

DanceFit Barre and Floor
Combining strengthening barre exercises for the lower body, with floor work to strengthen the upper body and core, this is an excellent overall body workout. This class will leave you feeling long and strong.

DanceFit Cardio Barre with Live Accompaniment
Get your heart pumping and muscles shaking all the while being inspired by upbeat, live percussive music. Cardio intervals are combined with strengthening barre exercises to keep your heart pumping and body moving. Top it all off with percussionist Greg Harrison accompanying the class, for an incredible movement and music experience

DanceFit Classical Ballet Barre and Centre
Focusing on creating length, stability, grace and poise, through classical ballet movements, both at the barre and in the centre, to offer an elegant yet challenging workout.

Fletcher Fusion™ Pilates
Combining the effective strengthening and lengthening techniques of Fletcher Pilates Towelwork®, Floorwork®, and Barrework®, this fusion class will strengthen and tone the body, mind and enhance circulation and overall body awareness. Flowing movement, precision, and creative transitions will give you a total body movement experience.

This class is recommended for participants that have had at least 1-2 years of training on pointe. Barre exercises and centre exercises will be taught. For those that have less than one year of training on pointe wishing to take this class, it is recommended you work in soft ballet shoes, in order to safely prepare and strengthen the lower leg, ankle and foot for pointe work. It is required that a participant takes ballet class directly before their pointe class. 

Strength, Stretch, Relax
This class combines strengthening body weight exercises along with flowing stretching sequences to lengthen tight muscles and release tension. The perfect workout for individuals wanting a low impact, gentle yet effective class.

Return/Refund Policy: 

Drop In classes are final sale. For registered classes, a refund may be issued in full if requested a minimum of 24 hours prior to the first scheduled class. A prorated refund will be issued if requested up to the end of the third class of the term. No refunds will be issued on registered classes if requested after the third class has occurred. 

All Class Bundles (5, 10, 20) are non-refundable and non-transferable however, if cancellation of a scheduled class is requested, the cost may be returned to the account for later use within the current term.

Selected Biographies


Aleksandar Antonijevic 

Guest Teacher 
Aleksandar Antonijevic A native of Yugoslavia, Aleksandar Antonijevic is a Principal Dancer with The National Ballet of Canada. He trained at the National Ballet School in Novi Sad, Serbia, joined The National Ballet of Canada in 1991 and was promoted to Principal Dancer in1995. An accomplished international guest artist, Mr. Antonijevic has performed with English National Ballet, Inoue Ballet Japan, Ballet Santiago of Chile and PACT Ballet South Africa and has partnered many of the world’s finest prima ballerinas, including Susan Jaffe, Vivana Durante, Lucia LaCarra and Evelyn Hart.

Johanna Bergfeldt

Intermediate Contemporary 
Johanna Bergfeldt Johanna Bergfeldt was born in Sweden and trained at the Royal Swedish Ballet School. She has an extensive performance background beginning with Östgötabaletten where she worked for six years. She later joined Norrdans, and Barents Dance Ensemble. She came to Canada in 2000 and was a dancer with Toronto Dance Theatre for six years. She has worked with numerous choreographers and companies including Kate Alton, Louis Laberge-Côté and ProArteDanza to name a few. Ms. Bergfeldt has been nominated three times for a Dora Mavor Moore Award. She teaches regularly at Canada’s National Ballet School, Dance-teq, GMD, The School of Toronto Dance Theatre, and Toronto Dance Theatre, as well as teaching Pilates at Riverdale Pilates.

Mercedes Bernardez

Pointe, Intermediate and Advanced Ballet 
Mercedes Bernardez Argentinian born Mercedes Bernardez had an international performing career as a Principal Dancer, and as Ballet Mistress in several ballet companies in Argentina, Chile and Venezuela. Ms. Bernardez was Artistic Director at Quinte from 1997-2003, before moving to Calgary to become ballet mistress at Alberta Ballet. Ms. Bernardez has been a guest teacher for Richmond Academy of Dance and Dance Umbrella in Vancouver, British Columbia. Ms. Bernardez now teaches company class for both The National Ballet of Canada and Ballet Jorgen.

Rex Harrington  

Guest Teacher 
Rex Harrington One of the most accomplished and acclaimed male dancers of his era, Rex Harrington brought seemingly limitless panache, energy, style and showmanship to the vast range of characterizations he created during his 20 years with The National Ballet of Canada. A much sought-after dancer internationally, he performed with Teatro alla Scala, San Francisco Ballet and Stuttgart Ballet. Renowned for his incomparable partnering skills, Mr. Harrington danced with such legendary ballerinas as Ekaterina Maximova, Carla Fracci, Evelyn Hart and Karen Kain.

Lise-Marie Jourdain  

Intermediate Ballet 
Lise-Marie Jourdain Currently a member of the Corps de Ballet for The National Ballet of Canada, Lise-Marie Jourdain trained with the Paris Opéra Ballet School and in 1995, she joined the Paris Opéra Ballet as a member of the Corps de Ballet. Ms. Jourdain joined The National Ballet of Canada in 2002. 

Kate Kernaghan  

Pilates, DanceFit Barre, DanceFit Barre and Floor combo, DanceFit Cardio, DanceFit Cardio Barre, Beginner Ballet, Intermediate and Advanced Jazz, Fletcher Fusion Pilates ™ 
Kate Kernaghan A graduate of Canada’s National Ballet School’s Teacher Training Program, Kate Kernaghan received her Royal Academy of Dance Teacher’s Certificate, as well as her Associate from the Imperial Society of Teacher’s of Dancing. She is also a Fletcher Pilates Licensed provider as well as a CanFit Pro Personal Trainer. Having had former students go onto Canada's National Ballet School, The Ailey School, the School of Alberta Ballet and Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, Ms. Kernaghan’s dedication to teaching and to her students never goes unnoticed. Ms. Kernaghan’s wealth of teaching experience in both the dance and fitness community lend to her confident, dynamic yet caring teaching style.

Louis Laberge-Côté 

Intermediate and Advanced Contemporary 
Louis Laberge-Côté Louis Laberge-Côté is a Toronto-based dancer, choreographer and teacher and a graduate of both L’École de danse de Québec and The School of Toronto Dance Theatre. He joined Toronto Dance Theatre in 1999 and danced with the company for eight seasons. From 2009 to 2011, he worked with Kevin O’Day -Ballett Nationaltheater Mannheim, Germany as a soloist and contemporary dance teacher. Mr. Laberge-Côté has received five Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations for Outstanding Performance and in 2006 NOW Magazine named him Toronto’s Dance Most Valuable Player

Jonathan Renna 

Beginner Ballet 
Jonathan Renna Currently a First Soloist with The National Ballet of Canada, Jonathan Renna has also danced with Alberta Ballet and Northern Ballet Theatre.  He has been a guest teacher with many companies including Rambert School of Contemporary Dance in London, England and the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

Tatiana Tchernova 

Pointe, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate and Advanced Ballet  
Tatiana Tchernova Tatiana Tchernova is a faculty member at Canada's National Ballet School, and company class teacher at The National Ballet of Canada. She was a Principal Dancer with The National Ballet Company of Uzbekistan where she performed lead roles in Swan Lake, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle and many others. Ms. Tchernova completed a master’s degree at the Moscow Institute of Dramatic and Fine Arts and attended the Paris Opera Ballet School program at New York University. As a Guest Teacher Ms Tchernova has worked with the National Ballet of Korea, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Finnish National Ballet among others. She has been a faculty member of the Jackson Mississippi International Ballet Competition since 1989.

Angel Wong  

Beginner Contemporary  
Angel Wong Angel Wong was born in Hong Kong and trained at The Australian Ballet School. She danced with The Hong Kong Ballet, English National Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Ballet Jörgen Canada and ProArteDanza. She currently dances with Opera Atelier. Ms. Wong danced many principal roles in the classical repertoire and also appeared in contemporary works by choreographers such as Kevin O’Day, Roberto Campenella, Robert Glumbek, Kit Holder and Robert Desrosiers. Ms. Wong also holds a Bachelors of Design from OCAD University.

Who can take classes at In Studio? 

In Studio offers a wide range of classes suitable for individuals with little or no dance training as well as for those who are at an advanced level. 

Our classes are open to adults, as well as mature pre-teens, ages 12 and up.

How do I sign up? 

Signing up for all classes can be done online, over the phone at 416 345 9595 or in person at the In Studio Registration Office, located at 470 Queens Quay West. Please note the Registration Office opens one hour prior to the start of class and closes 30 minutes after class begins.

Which classes require registration, and which classes can be attended using a class bundle?

We offer an introduction to ballet workshop as well as a beginner jazz workshop, which both require registration. All other classes on the schedule may be attended using a class bundle. Please note, a change in expiration timelines for class bundles will take effect as of Monday, September 8, 2014. Please note the following changes;

5 class bundle: expires 5 weeks from date of purchase
10 class bundle: expires 10 weeks from date of purchase
20 class bundle: expires 12 weeks from date of purchase

Where do classes take place? 

All classes at In Studio, take place at The Walter Carsen Centre for The National Ballet of canada, located at 470 Queens Quay West, just west of Spadina Avenue on the waterfront.

Is parking available? 

Paid parking (cash only) is available on the south side of Queens Quay West, just east of Bathurst Street. There is additional paid parking available behind Shoppers Drug Mart, located on the north side of Queens Quay West, just east of Spadina Avenue.

*Please note – Due to the revitalization and construction along Queens Quay West, it is now a one way street only traveling westbound. Expect delays. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. 

How do I get there by TTC? 

From Union Station, take the #509 Harbourfront replacement bus to Spadina Avenue. From Spadina Station, take the #510 Spadina streetcar to Queens Quay West.

What should I wear? 

Ballet classes – soft ballet shoes, form-fitting clothing (leotard and tights or t-shirt and yoga pants). 

Jazz classes – form-fitting clothing (leotard and tights, leotard and shorts) bare feet, socks, jazz shoes or toe undies are all suitable.

Contemporary – form-fitting clothing (leotard and tights or t-shirt and yoga pants) bare feet or socks.

DanceFit Barre classes, Fletcher Fusion Pilates, DanceFit Barre and Floor – form-fitting clothing (leotard and tights or t-shirt and yoga pants) socks or bare feet.

DanceFit Cardio Barre with Live Accompaniment – comfortable clothing, running shoes or dance sneakers.

What level is appropriate for me? 

For Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary classes:  

Beginner Ballet Level I: 0 – 1 year experience. These classes move slowly to ensure participants are learning at a steady pace. This level is designed for participants that have completed the introduction to ballet workshop.

Beginner Ballet Level II: 1 – 2 years experience. For beginner ballet students that have completed our introduction to ballet workshop and have done at least one year of beginner ballet level l.

*Please note* Beginner Ballet: It is highly recommended that participants complete the introduction to ballet workshop before progressing to the beginner ballet class.

Elementary: a minimum of 2 years experience

Intermediate: 2 – 5 years experience, with a minimum of 2 years

Advanced: 5+ years experience

For DanceFit and Fletcher Fusion™ Pilates classes: 

Open to all levels and require no dance experience.

Do you offer make up classes?

Make up classes will only be issued due to injury or illness and will be offered on a case by case basis. Make up classes are limited to two per term. There are no extensions on bundles’ expiration dates.
