Cacti

At one level a witty, tongue-in-cheek jeu d’esprit satirizing the ponderousness of much modern dance (and critical responses to it), Alexander Ekman’s Cacti is also in itself a wonderful, iconoclastic, choreographic treat, full of startlingly inventive uses of space, sound and physical design.

Cacti & The Four Temperaments & Rubies Ballet Talk

Rubies

Rubies forms the central section of George Balanchine’s magisterial 1967 ballet triptych, Jewels. Set to music by his frequent collaborator, Igor Stravinsky, Rubies revels in the score’s jazz-infused rhythms, creating a buoyant, propulsive paean to the ethos and sensibility of both artists’ adopted homeland.

The Four Temperaments

One of the most frequently performed of all Balanchine’s ballets, The Four Temperaments contains some of his most arresting and characteristic choreography. Created to music by Paul Hindemith, the ballet comprises a set of variations inspired by the idea of the four humours – melancholic, sanguinic, phlegmatic and choleric.

“★★★★/4 Cacti packs a wallop... Sly, silly, smart, sardonic and sensational” Toronto Star
