Lewis Carroll’s perpetually winsome, subversive, cunning and hilarious children’s classic is given a glorious ballet treatment by British choreographer Christopher Wheeldon that is the very measure of the original. 

Since the first competition in 1988, The Erik Bruhn Prize has featured superb young dancers from The Royal Danish Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, The Royal Ballet (UK) and The National Ballet of Canada.

The quintessence of romantic ballet, and one of the most enduringly affecting and popular in the classical repertoire, Giselle continues to cast its inimitable spell over audiences with the sheer beauty of its staging and choreography, its intimations of the supernatural, its open appeal to feelings and its potent narrative of undying love and unbridled passion.

The National Ballet’s sumptuous, comical, touching and spellbinding version of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s Christmas tale was created in 1995 and has been enthralling audiences – especially children – ever since. 

Few figures tower over – indeed, haunt – the history of ballet as does that of Vaslav Nijinsky. His passion, legendary physicality, daring and virtuosity – not to mention the adoration he received from audiences – created the model for male dancing throughout the early 20th century, even if few performers ever matched his greatness.
