Becoming Apollo

Principal Dancer Guillaume Côté celebrates his 20th anniversary this season with The National Ballet of Canada. Renowned for his interpretation of the young god Apollo who is ushered into adulthood by the muses of poetry, mime and dance in George Balanchine masterpiece, Guillaume reprises the title role this Winter Season.

“Apollo is an iconic role for the male dancer. Performing the ballet feels ritualistic… sacred in a way,” said Guillaume.

Considered one of ballet’s most important works, Apollo established a new aesthetic that brought the language of classical ballet into a modern context. There is no better piece than Apollo to celebrate this milestone achievement of an artist such as Guillaume.

Guillaume was honoured by Artistic Director Karen Kain and the company onstage after his performance in Apollo on Saturday, March 2 at 7:30 pm.
