YOU dance: Inspiring a New Generation
November 5, 2018

Heather Ogden in Anna Karenina.

The National Ballet of Canada’s signature education and outreach programme, YOU dance, sparks creativity in young people by connecting them to the world of dance. Led by Lindsay Fischer, Artistic Director, YOU dance/Principal Ballet Master, YOU dance engages students in grades four to six through free interactive workshops led by an Artist Educator, performances, residences and livestreams, connecting with over 200,000 students since 2007.

For the past four years, YOU dance has been livestreamed to classrooms across Canada, reaching over 65,000 students from every province and territory. YOU dance has also had three residencies in Toronto’s Regent Park where students have participated in workshops as well as attended performances at Daniels Spectrum. To date, over 9,000 students and community members have participated.

In addition to bringing the world of dance to young people, YOU dance gives the Apprentices of The National Ballet of Canada valuable performance training. The National Ballet currently employs 27 dancers who began their careers as RBC Apprentices performing with YOU dance, now representing 40% of the company.
