1. What are the top three activities you have been doing during social distancing?

Taking long walks with family through the Hollywood Hills, online class, eating, intense Monopoly gauntlets, Jenga tournaments and teaching my family to like vegetables. Oops, only three?

2. What would you have done as a career if ballet hadn't come your way?

I was a sports guy before I ever pointed my toes. My best sports were basketball and baseball. I initially envisioned myself in the MLB or NBA. Life is funny.

3. Have you ever had an embarrassing moment performance-wise?

During Giselle, in my first classical variation with the company, I tore a muscle on the bottom of my foot during the performance. Coming off stage I was terrified everyone knew because I was in so much pain. My mother was in the audience and assured me she couldn't tell. Even though it was a very traumatic moment onstage, I didn't feel I let the company or myself down.

4. What is your work philosophy?

My work philosophy used to be "blood, sweat and tears". It's evolved into "blood, sweat and tears with a cool down".

5. How do you handle criticism?

It depends on my mental preparation. I'm a rebel at heart but when I realize everyone is on my side, I'm very open to it.

6. Do you have any habits or superstitions before you perform?

I meditate with my connection to the floor and my breath.

7. What's your definition of a successful ballet dancer?

I'll have to get back to you. I'm working on it.

8. What’s the best thing about being a dancer and what’s the worst?

The best part about being a ballet dancer has been self-discovery through this art form. The worst part has been those days you can't turn.

9. What's your guilty pleasure song that'll make you rock out no matter where you are?

Operator by Lapsley.

10. What are three random things most people don't know about you?

  • I've played classical piano since I was nine.
  • I love to cook.
  • I'm an avid reader. I just finished Moby Dick!
11. What was the last thing you changed your mind about?

I should have never taken down my Christmas tree. My friends and I miss it!

12. What cheers you up on an off day?

Warm tea and a call to my mother.

13. Do you have any bad habits that you're working on breaking?

Biting my nails.

14. What is your favorite memory of being onstage?

Dancing Petite Mort by Jiří Kylián. The refined animalism felt natural and challenging at the same time.
Joe Chapman. Photo by Karolina Kuras.
15. Favorite ballet?

Our production of The Nutcracker makes me cry each year. We do so many shows yet it's exhilarating. Did I mention I love Christmas?

16. What's the biggest risk you've taken, either personally or in your career?

I moved to New York City when I was 15. I felt I had to do it for my career but the loneliness was crippling. I'm finally coming out of that.

17. When are you most proud of yourself?

When my friends that are not dancers come to watch me perform. It has made me very proud to share my dance world with them.

18. Tell us about an awe-inspiring thing you've seen or experienced.

On long walks with my family, there are usually many hawks soaring about. They effortlessly float in the air. I could watch them for hours.

19. Do you have a favourite quote?

A wise woman once told to me, "There needs to be a difference in your personal life and performing life." I took that one to heart.

20. Finally, what is the top item on your bucket list?

Snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
