Angels’ Atlas Wins Two Dora Mavor Moore Awards
Crystal Pite for Outstanding Original Choreography
Jay Gower Taylor for Outstanding Achievement in Scenic Design
June 30, 2020 … The National Ballet of Canada's production of Angels' Atlas has won two Dora Mavor Moore Awards in the Dance Division. The 41st annual ceremony took place virtually in Toronto last night with an hour-long online presentation. Choreographer Crystal Pite won a Dora for Outstanding Original Choreography and Scenic Designer Jay Gower Taylor for Outstanding Achievement in Scenic Design. Angels’ Atlas made its world premiere in Toronto earlier this year at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.
“Angels' Atlas is a true masterpiece. Crystal has created a work that not only mesmerized audience members but was also a truly inspirational experience for the dancers and all of us at The National Ballet of Canada. With her distinct choreographic voice, she and Jay have created a hauntingly beautiful ballet that explores the power of human connection and the ephemerality of existence, which has particular resonance during the times we are now living in. I am thrilled that Angels’ Atlas has been recognized with two Doras for Outstanding Original Choreography and Outstanding Achievement in Scenic Design to celebrate this remarkable achievement,” says Karen Kain, Artistic Director.
Angels’ Atlas is Ms. Pite’s second work commissioned by the National Ballet. Her first work for the company, Emergence, also designed by Mr. Taylor, was created in 2009 and won four Doras for Outstanding Production, Outstanding New Choreography, Outstanding Performance and Outstanding Sound Design/Composition. Based in Vancouver, the Olivier Award-winning Ms. Pite is one of the most in demand choreographers at work today. Her own company, Kidd Pivot, was formed in 2001 and she is an Associate Dance Artist of Canada’s National Arts Centre, Associate Choreographer of Netherlands Dance Theatre and recipient of the 2008 Governor General’s Mentorship Award.
Mr. Taylor started in theatre as a professional dancer where he established an international career spanning more than 20 years. As a Scenic Designer, Mr. Taylor has collaborated with Ms. Pite over the last decade, creating onstage environments for her works.
The Dora Awards reflect a range of work across 7 divisions and 46 categories presented by 146 professional theatre, dance and opera companies in the city of Toronto.
