New Voices: Three World Premieres Released Today

Commissioned Dance Films Created for Spotlight Series

April 27, 2021… Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, today announced that New Voices, a programme of world premieres by three exciting Canadian dancemakers, is released and available for viewing onlineThe commissioned dance films include Soul by Jera Wolfein a state of vanishing by National Ballet Choreographic Associate Alysa Pires and Trase Pa by Kevin A. OrmsbyBoth Mr. Wolfe and Mr. Ormsby make their choreographic debuts with the National Ballet.  

Commissioning new work has remained a priority for The National Ballet of Canada during the pandemicCollaborating with these talented artists on new creations for the digital space has been a joy in these difficult times. They have inspired and challenged our dancers and provided a beautiful virtual dance experience for our audiences.” said Ms. Kain.

Soul by Jera Wolfe focuses on the nature of relationships and features two separate duets set to the same music by Max Richter and edited together for filmThe Dora Award-winning choreographer’s moving, poetic work is performed by Principal Dancer Guillaume Côté and First Soloist Tanya Howard and Principal Dancer Harrison James and First Soloist Ben Rudisin.

Kevin A. Ormsby, Artistic Director of KasheDancecreates Trase Pa, ainventive piece that reflects on the ancestries and histories dancers bring to their work as artists. Trase Pa is performed by First Soloists Tanya Howard and Ben Rudisin and Corps de Ballet member Teagan Richman-Taylor and is set to the music of Haitian-born composer David Bontempsrecorded live by members of The National Ballet of Canada Orchestra

Soul and Trase Pa are directed and edited by acclaimed videographer and long-time National Ballet collaborator Paul McNultyin a state of vanishing is directed by Mr. McNulty and edited by Sean Leonard.  

Curated by Ms. Kain, Spotlight Series features commissioned dance films, cinematic reimaginings of existing repertoire, as well as exciting short programmes of excerpts from performances shot at the Four Seasons Centre before the pandemic.

Spotlight Series is available on the company’s website and social platforms FREE of charge.

The filming of this programme took place prior to the latest Ontario stay at home order. The company is following all the health and safety recommendations and adhering to Public Health guidelines, implementing many safety protocols including health screening, testing, social distancing, PPE and the sanitization of equipment and studios.
