Kay Ambrose

Swan Lake tutu

Odile costume from Swan Lake designed by Kay Ambrose (1955). Photo by Setareh Sarmadi.

Ambrose designed the sets and costumes for the company’s first production of Swan Lake. Swan Lake, Act II premiered on November 17, 1953. The first full-length production followed soon after on January 19, 1955.

Originally a black tutu with the sequined and gold details pictured here, the base of the bodice and skirt have faded to variegated shades of blue and purple after years of wearing, cleaning and aging.
