Santo Loquasto

An Italian Straw Hat costume

Hats from An Italian Straw Hat designed by Santo Loquasto (2005). Photo by Bruce Zinger.

Hats are integral to the plot of An Italian Straw Hat – almost every character in the ballet wears a hat. As such, Loquasto designed over 65 hats ranging in style from simple and whimsical to extravagant and exaggerated. Loquasto used many historical references when designing the hats for this production but took liberties with the time period and exaggerated many details to suit the farcical nature of the ballet.
