Winter Triple Bill of Premieres

World Premiere of UtopiVerse by William Yong
North American Premiere of Emma Portner’s islands
Canadian Premiere of Suite en Blanc by Serge Lifar
Casting Announced

March 11, 2024… Hope Muir, Joan and Jerry Lozinski Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, today announced the casting for the world premiere of UtopiVerse by William Yong, the North American premiere of islands by Emma Portner and the Canadian premiere of Suite en Blanc by Serge Lifar, onstage March 20 – 24, 2024 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.

Toronto-based choreographer William Yong creates his first commission for the National Ballet. A futuristic spectacle, UtopiVerse is a multi-disciplinary exploration of the concept of utopia and the pursuit of perfection. The work features music by Benjamin Britten and Canadian composer Constantine Caravassilis.

islands is a sculptural duet by Canadian genre-breaking choreographer Emma Portner. The highly acclaimed work premiered at Norwegian National Ballet to instant acclaim. Originally created for two women, the powerful and touching pas de deux explores the notion that women in ballet are often separated by tutus by fusing their bodies together. islands is set to an eclectic compilation of music by contemporary artists including Forest Swords.

Serge Lifar’s stunning Suite en Blanc pays homage to the classical form and is an unforgettable celebration of ballet technique – showy and chic with clouds of white tutus. Set to the music of Édouard Lalo, Lifar’s ballet is an exciting addition to the National Ballet’s repertoire of classical works.
