Why did you commission Alexei Ratmansky to create a new Romeo and Juliet?

Ever since it entered our repertoire in 1964, Romeo and Juliet has always been a touchstone for the company. It is a ballet that has everything you could ask for - rich emotion, great dramatic roles, a beautiful narrative and, of course, one of the greatest scores ever written. Alexei Ratmansky is a brilliant choreographer renowned for his musicality, inventive movement and emotional expressiveness. His aesthetic - steeped in the Russian school but open to contemporary sources - is ideal for this work and our company. To have him create a new Romeo and Juliet for us is a dream come true.

The season's schedule has one ballet in November and three in March. Can you tell us about this change?

This change will only be for the 2011/12 season - we will go back to two ballets in the fall, winter and summer again for the 2012/13 season. Our schedule in the Four Seasons Centre in November is quite restricted between the Canadian Opera Company's fall season and the run of The Nutcracker so we have to be very creative with our time in the theatre. The premiere of Alexei Ratmansky's Romeo and Juliet in the fall is a big undertaking for the artists and production team and will require extra technical rehearsals on stage. Plus, we felt the appeal of a new Romeo and Juliet by this extraordinary artist should have extra performances so everyone in the city can celebrate with us.

How did you select the ballets for the 60th anniversary season?

To celebrate this landmark anniversary, I wanted to create a season that reflects the remarkable range of artistry of this company. I selected ballets that both honour our illustrious past and embrace what is new and exciting in the art form. The Sleeping Beauty, La Fille mal gardée and Elite Syncopations hold cherished places in our history. The Seagull is a beautiful vehicle for the dramatic talents of our artists. New work is the lifeblood of any organization and I am thrilled we will have a new Romeo and Juliet by Mr. Ratmansky and will premiere Kevin O'Day's brilliant version of Hamlet. Song of the Wayfarer is a deeply moving duet for our male dancers and Chroma is one of the most exciting contemporary works I have ever seen that I had to bring it back.
