The Position
The National Ballet of Canada seeks a detail-oriented theatrical scene shop professional for the role of Shop Technician. Working under the supervision and direction of the Head Carpenter, the Shop Technician works alongside all craft shop departments (Carpentry, Props, Scenic and Electrics) to realize physical production elements for the National Ballet of Canada.
The successful candidate excels in theatrical scenery building and scene shop operations. They demonstrate strong organizational skills, the ability to work efficiently under pressure, and flexibility adapting to changing priorities. The candidate will also exhibit a collaborative attitude, willingness to learn, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to building a positive and supportive workplace culture.
Work Periods
Guarantee of 28 weeks per season (July through June). Typical annual work schedule fluctuates between 36-50 weeks per season depending on the build schedule and production calendar.
Key Responsibilities
• Assist in the building and construction of theatrical scenery, including flats, platforms, stairs, and custom scenic elements for new productions.
• Maintain and organize shop tools, equipment, and supply inventory.
• Perform warehousing operations including packing, loading, unloading, shipping, receiving, and show bin organization.
• Maintain and repair existing and inbound rental productions.
• Assist in the building and installation of custom lighting fixtures, batteries, LED tape sys-tems, and show-specific electrical elements.
• Maintain and enforce the highest standards of health and safety.
Qualifications and Competencies
• Forklift and MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platform) certification
• Knowledge of scenic construction materials and techniques
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications
• Proficiency in the safe operation of power tools including table saws, chop saws, drill presses, routers, and hand tools
• Knowledge of wood, metal, and composite materials used in scenic construction
• Working at heights certification with experience using fall arrest systems
• Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and SharePoint
• Ability to perform warehousing and physical activities including lifting up to 50 pounds
Assets
• MIG welding experience
• Familiarity with DC motors, servo motors, and remote-control systems
• Knowledge of theatrical lighting equipment and wiring, including LED tape and DC power distribution.
• Familiarity with theatrical automation equipment, winches, and motion control systems
• Experience with Vectorworks/AutoCAD or similar technical drawing software
Working Conditions
• Primary work location is the Gretchen Ross Production Centre (155 Nantucket Boulevard, Scarborough). Occasional meetings at the Walter Carsen Centre (470 Queens Quay W, To-ronto).
• Typical schedule is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday
• Lifting 50 pounds in the normal course of daily work
• Prolonged periods of walking and standing.
• Work at height utilizing fall arrest systems, including on elevated platforms and lifts.
• Work with power tools, machinery, and automated equipment requiring strict adherence to safety protocols
• Frequent exposure to noise, dust, and varying shop floor conditions
Compensation and Benefits
Wages and benefits are set forth by IATSE collective bargaining agreement between NBC and IATSE Local 58 with which applicant must be a member in good standing. Additional benefits provided by NBC include:
