Alexandra MacDonald was born in Calgary, Alberta and trained at the International School of Ballet in Calgary, Alberta and Boston Ballet’s Trainee Program in Massachusetts. She joined The National Ballet of Canada as an RBC Apprentice in 2007 and was promoted to First Soloist in 2016.
Most recently, Alexandra debuted as Mother/The Queen of Hearts in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Christopher Wheeldon and performed in the North American premiere of Emma Portner’s islands. Alexandra has danced such roles as Princess Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty, the Snow Queen in The Nutcracker, Titania in The Dream, Myrtha, Queen of the Wilis in Giselle, Choleric in The Four Temperaments and La Vaniteuse in Le Petit Prince. She has also danced roles in Frame by Frame by Robert Lepage and Guillaume Côté as well as in such ballets as Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, Onegin, Nijinsky, Don Quixote, Emma Bovary, La Fille mal gardée, Hamlet, The Seagull, Pinocchio, The Concert, Symphony in C, Elite Syncopations, Suite en Blanc, Opus 19/The Dreamer, Theme and Variations, The Four Seasons, West Side Story Suite, Glass Pieces, Carousel (A Dance), Emergence, Angels’ Atlas, Cacti and The Dreamers Ever Leave You.
In 2018, Alexandra was the recipient of the David Tory Award and in 2010, she received the Patron Award of Merit. She was a finalist in the Youth America Grand Prix and competed in the Prix de Lausanne in 2007. In 2006, Alexandra received the Royal Academy of Dance Solo Seal Award and was a finalist in the Genée International Ballet Competition.
