Supporting Canadian Choreographers and the Dance Community
CreativAction shares The National Ballet of Canada’s resources with the Canadian dance community and develops Canadian choreographic talent. Created by Artistic Director Emerita Karen Kain and led by Director of Artist Development Programmes and Choreographic Associate Robert Binet, CreativAction has three core activities:
Open Space
Now Accepting Applications! Apply by September 29.
The National Ballet provides over 2,000 hours of free studio space each season at The Walter Carsen Centre, free of charge, to independent choreographers for one to two-week periods. This programme is now open for applications for studio space in November and December of 2023 as well as March, May and June of 2024. We look forward to welcoming you into our studios.

Citadel Spring Mix
Now Accepting Applications! Apply by September 29.
A new joint initiative from Citadel + Compagnie and The National Ballet of Canada’s CreativAction programme, Citadel Spring Mix supports local professional dance artists with projects that are ready to expand from studio to stage. Selected works will be developed through the National Ballet’s Open Space programme and presented in Spring 2024 at The Citadel: Ross Centre for Dance.

Choreographic Workshop
The Choreographic Workshop is a platform that provides National Ballet dancers and independent choreographers the opportunity to create works in collaboration with the company’s artists, music and production staff, within the National Ballet’s facilities.

Micro-Commissions
Each season, the National Ballet will commission choreographers to create three new small scale, flexible and innovative dance works that can be presented in a wide variety of contexts.
