Val Caniparoli
Léo Delibes and Ernest Guiraud
Dr. Coppélius marks the first full-length story ballet commission by Artistic Director Hope Muir. With this reimagining of the beloved classic Coppélia, Muir has intentionally chosen a story that has long welcomed children into the world of dance. Choreographed by Val Caniparoli, a deeply experienced dancemaker in classical narrative structure, this new interpretation focuses on the mysterious inventor himself and offers a timely reflection on empathy and acceptance.
Dr. Coppélius is supported by The Anna McCowan-Johnson New Creations Fund.
Coppélia was the first full-length ballet the company performed, a version staged by Celia Franca in 1952. A new production was created by Erik Bruhn in 1975 and toured to London the same year, featuring Rudolf Nureyev as Franz and Bruhn himself as Dr. Coppélius. Now, Hope Muir revives this beloved family ballet – last performed in 1998 – commissioning renowned choreographer Val Caniparoli to reimagine the classic for a new generation.
