Overview

Stravinsky transformed the landscape of 20th-century classical music and set ballet on a new course for the modern era. His revolutionary compositions include iconic collaborations with Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, such as The Firebird and The Rite of Spring, and continue to inspire choreographers today. Echoes of Stravinsky brings together three works shaped by Stravinsky’s influence, highlighting the artistry of The National Ballet of Canada Orchestra under Music Director and Principal Conductor David Briskin, celebrating his 20th year with the company.

Stravinsky Violin Concerto is presented by Walter Carsen, O.C.

Canadian Premiere Scènes de Ballet

Christopher Wheeldon’s Scènes de Ballet will be performed in its entirety by students of Canada’s National Ballet School, marking the first time in our history the school has shared a programme with the company. The work highlights young dancers at various stages of their classical training alongside their “mirror” reflections, offering an intimate glimpse into the making of a dancer. Set to Stravinsky’s music of the same name, the work was created for the School of American Ballet in 1999. Its Canadian premiere highlights the enduring connection between The National Ballet of Canada and NBS, along with Wheeldon’s significance to the company repertoire as the creator of two signature productions, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Winter’s Tale.

Historical Note

From its inception, The National Ballet of Canada has made live music central to its mission. The company has had four Music Directors to date: Music Director Emeritus George Crum (1951 – 1984), Conductor and Music Administrator Ermanno Florio (1985 – 1990), Music Director and Principal Conductor Ormsby Wilkins (1990 – 2006) and current Music Director and Principal Conductor David Briskin, who celebrates his 20th anniversary this season.

Stravinsky Violin Concerto

George Balanchine’s Stravinsky Violin Concerto, created for New York City Ballet’s landmark Stravinsky Festival in 1972, reflects the choreographer’s rich artistic partnership with the composer. Balanchine returned to Stravinsky’s music more than any other composer and Stravinsky Violin Concerto is Balanchine’s tribute to that collaboration. Last performed by The National Ballet of Canada in 2004, this brilliant neoclassical work captures the precision, complexity and energy that united two transformative figures of music and movement.

Company Premiere Chamber

Originally created for Nederlands Dans Theater in 2012, Medhi Walerski’s Chamber features a visceral score by Joby Talbot, inspired by the primal energy of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.  Artistic Director of Ballet BC, Walerski is a leading Canadian arts figure and a highly sought-after collaborator, shaped by his longstanding ties to European contemporary dance traditions. He has described Chamber as “a ritualistic dance that tries to balance order, chaos and the collective and individual nature of humanity.”
