Shakespeare’s Verona comes to life in bustling street scenes, fierce duels and the tenderness of Romeo and Juliet’s forbidden love as The National Ballet of Canada presents John Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet for the 75th anniversary, honouring an iconic production instrumental to the company’s artistic growth. Created for Stuttgart Ballet in 1962 and first performed by the National Ballet in 1964, Romeo and Juliet is a timeless showcase for the artist development, dramatic depth and musicality of Cranko’s legacy, set to Sergei Prokofiev’s celebrated score.

This production of Romeo and Juliet entered the repertoire of The National Ballet of Canada on February 8, 1995 and was totally underwritten by Walter Carsen, O.C.

The Romeo and Juliet revitalization (2027) is supported by production underwriters Mary & John Crocker.

About Romeo and Juliet

Historical Note

Celebrated Canadian filmmaker Norman Campbell created a film of John Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet for CBC Television in 1965 featuring Veronica Tennant and Earl Kraul in the title roles. A dancer of exceptional dramatic ability, Veronica made Juliet a signature role and she chose it to mark her retirement in 1989 after an illustrious 25-year career.
