Rudolph Nureyev
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Rudolf Nureyev put The National Ballet of Canada on the world stage in 1972 with his celebrated version of Marius Petipa’s The Sleeping Beauty. Opulent and exacting, it launched an unprecedented era of international touring and acclaim for the young company. Set to Tchaikovsky’s luminous score, this jewel of the repertoire continues to shape artists today, its exquisite choreography spanning the fairy variations of the Prologue to Princess Aurora’s famous Rose Adagio, the effervescent Bluebird pas de deux and the grand finale.
The Sleeping Beauty is made possible by generous contributions from Margaret Fleck & Jim Fleck, C.C., The Catherine and Maxwell Meighen Foundation, Sandra Pitblado, C.M. & Jim Pitblado, C.M., Gretchen Ross and Nancy Pencer & Michael Benjamin. Additional support is provided by Fondation DRG (2027).
When Celia Franca invited Rudolf Nureyev to stage The Sleeping Beauty on the National Ballet, it was her biggest risk to date but her bold ambition paid off brilliantly. The production has remained a signature work for more than 50 years. A defining moment came in 1972, when its triumphant appearance at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City secured the National Ballet’s reputation as one of the world’s leading ballet companies.
