Shakespeare’s Verona comes to life in bustling street scenes, fierce duels and the tenderness of Romeo and Juliet’s forbidden love as The National Ballet of Canada presents John Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet for the 75th anniversary, honouring an iconic production instrumental to the company’s artistic growth. Created for Stuttgart Ballet in 1962 and first performed by the National Ballet in 1964, Romeo and Juliet is a timeless showcase for the artist development, dramatic depth and musicality of Cranko’s legacy, set to Sergei Prokofiev’s celebrated score.

Two acclaimed works return to The National Ballet of Canada in a dynamic double bill celebrating the company’s innovation and global influence. Crystal Pite’s award-winning Emergence was a breakout success that redefined the relationship between classical and contemporary traditions, while Silent Screen introduced the storied partnership of Sol León and Paul Lightfoot to Toronto audiences through one of their most admired creations. Together, these mesmerizing works embody the ambition and artistic excellence that define the National Ballet today.

The Beginning of Forever

Thursday, June 10, 2027 at 7:30 pm

The Beginning of Forever follows the huge success of both Anima Animus and The Four Seasons as David Dawson’s first commission for The National Ballet of Canada in his role as Resident Choreographer. A trilogy of works that form a sweeping arc, The Beginning of Forever explores the emotional forces that shape us – life, love and ascension – through a prism of movement, memory and meditation. Beginning with “The Journey” and progressing through “The Promise” and “The Truth,” the work traces the human experience from the intensity of the creative act to a realm of memory and longing through the form of neo-classical ballet technique. The Beginning of Forever features an original score by award-winning composer Peter Gregson.

The Sleeping Beauty

Rudolf Nureyev put The National Ballet of Canada on the world stage in 1972 with his celebrated version of Marius Petipa’s The Sleeping Beauty. Opulent and exacting, it launched an unprecedented era of international touring and acclaim for the young company. Set to Tchaikovsky’s luminous score, this jewel of the repertoire continues to shape artists today, its exquisite choreography spanning the fairy variations of the Prologue to Princess Aurora’s famous Rose Adagio, the effervescent Bluebird pas de deux and the grand finale.
