Nova Bhattacharya is an award-winning dancer, choreographer and cultural leader based in Toronto. She is the Founding Artistic Director of Nova Dance, established in 2008. Bhattacharya crafts vivid images that invite the viewer on a journey of heart and mind. Integrating improvised movement and gesture, she invents a language that needs no translation. Trained in Bharatnatyam, holding experiences of Butoh and folk dances of the world, drawing inspiration from her Bengali culture, our relationship with the earth and each other, she reinterprets traditions to tell new stories with movement. She has been a guest performer with Peggy Baker Dance Projects, Compagnie Flak and Fujiwara Dance Inventions. Her choreography has been commissioned by DanceWorks, Canadian Stage, Luminato Festival and Tarragon Theatre and has been presented across Canada, in Germany, India, Japan, UK and Uganda. Her current artistic focus is the creation of a large-scale work titled Svāhā and is set to premiere September 2022.
