The National Ballet of Canada mourns the death of Mary A. McDonald, pianist with the company for 35 years. Mary passed away peacefully at the Houses of Providence on Friday, January 25, 2019 in her 98th year. Mary was the eldest child of Joseph and Anna Rae McDonald. Survived by her loving brother Alex (Mary Ann); preceded in death by her beloved siblings Catherine Bolger (Frank), Bill (Audrey), Joe (Alice), Anna Meyer (Jim), Jack and Ed (Jean). Beloved aunt of many nieces and nephews, including Catherine (Stefan), John (Jo-Ann), Anne, Joe (Supattana), Joanne (Kevin), Tim, Peter, Paul, Mary Ellen, Audrey (Gerry), Ed (Donna), Carolyn (Mark) and Sarah; cherished great aunt to Stefan, Monica, Ryan, the late Lindsay, Michael, Katrya, Alison and Julia. As pianist for the National Ballet of Canada for 35 years, Mary lived a full and exciting life. At an International Ballet Competition in Moscow, she won the award for Best Pianist. After retirement, Mary played for the George Brown School of Dance.
